Tethis settled into his Virtual World office and took a moment to admire the view of his virtual garden before he signaled to BURT that he was ready to receive visitors. “Send them in.”

No sooner had he finished speaking than there was a quiet knock on his office door.

“Come,” he commanded, and Felarif entered cautiously.

“You wanted to see me?” he asked.

“I wanted to see all of you,” the mage half-scolded. “Don’t tell me you are the only one to arrive on time?”

The visitor stepped inside quickly. “No, Master Tethis. I am merely earlier than the others.”

Judging from the nervous flit of his gaze, that was a lie but Tethis decided to play along anyway. The young noble had probably drawn the shortest straw.

“Oh?” he asked as if he suspected nothing.

“I was worried,” Felarif explained. Again, nervousness flashed in his eyes, and it seemed obvious the young mage wasn’t alone in his feelings.

“I see,” he acknowledged.

The boy clearly had something he wanted to say but Tethis wouldn’t make it easy for him.

Felarif glanced toward the door. “We…er…I mean, I wondered if you were okay. You…look tired, Master. With all due respect.”

He gave him a smile—a tired one as if to prove the young mage’s point but a smile nonetheless.

“I am tired, Felarif, but that doesn’t change what I need you four to do.”

L’thinis, K’trevl, and Reyz peered around the door as if his words had summoned them. He chuckled and waved them in.

“Come on,” he urged. “We really have no time to lose. I have received a request.”

L’thinis ushered his fellow mages in and closed the door behind them as if that made any difference to the privacy arrangements BURT had made. Still, Tethis appreciated the gesture.

He waited until they had settled themselves before him. “I have had a request,” he began and explained what Stephanie and the Navy required.

The four sat in stunned silence when he had finished.

“Well?” he asked when the silence had gone on a little too long. “What do you think?”

“I…I… We’re honored,” Felarif replied and nudged L’thinis. The other mage stirred and added his affirmation.

“Us, too,” K’trevl hastened to say and Rayz nodded vigorously.

“Honored,” she managed, a heartbeat later and twined her hand around K’trevl’s.

Tethis noticed and smiled indulgently. “I understand your nervousness,” he told them, “but we will go as members of One R&D and the Navy will take very good care of you.”

“Will we all go on the same ship?” Rayz asked, and the old mage realized the cause of her nervousness.

“No,” he replied. “L’thinis and Felarif will be posted to the Henry Chauvel and you and K’trevl will be on the Cathay Williams.”

“And what do the Navy need us for?” Felarif asked. “Have they run out of guns?”

Tethis smiled, glad to see the young mage had regained some of his usual attitude. “No. They’ve discovered there are some situations where magic is needed and they’ve asked if they can borrow some of One R&D’s mages until they are able to find their own.”

“What’s to stop them from keeping us?” Rayz wanted to know, and the others looked concerned.
